Some time ago we had a piece of land; now we have one of the best tracks in the country and some of the best riders.
A DREAM THAT TURNED INTO A REALITY
Since 2006, our aim has never changed. We want to offer young people the chance to develop their riding skills by providing a welcoming environment and a sport that is accessible from a grassroots level, offering free loans of bikes and equipment.
The track was originally built by Groundwork Solent on behalf of Gosport Borough Council. In 2007, Gosport BMX Club upgraded the track to a regional racing standard, which enabled us to provide coaching and training opportunities to both members and non-members. The Club enjoyed 10 years on this track and hosted many regional events, as well as producing riders who went on to win world rankings.
In 2017, the Club were successful in our application to Gosport Borough Council to secure a share of National Lottery funding from Sport’s England’s ‘Inspired Facilities’ fund. Keen to build on the Olympic legacy of BMX racing, this investment allowed us to build a new national standard track and a smaller pump track.
In 2022, after many years of planning and hard work from the committee, the Club became one of the only Clubs in the South to have floodlights installed. This was thanks to funding provided by The Veola Environmental Trust. This was a historic moment for the Club, allowing our riders to train all year round.
In 2022, the Club were British Club Champions. Our 2024 highlights so far are:
Two British Champion riders, one for the second year running (who we are very lucky to have as a Club coach!).
Eight Gosport riders went to the world championships in Charlotte, North Carolina;
Ten Gosport riders competed in Euro rounds, including in Italy and Belgium;
An incredible 46 Gosport riders competed in this year’s National Series and we had our first ever elite female, race in the Championship Women category. The Club finished 11th and the NRT finished 23rd overall in the standings this year and we will look to improve on that next year.
We have had more riders than ever compete in the South Regional series (75 so far) and some of the talent emerging from that racing is going to be exciting to watch in the future.
